Tim David propelled Australia to a thrilling victory over New Zealand, clinching the win from the final ball in the first T20 match held in Wellington.
Australia had to chase a target of 216 runs. In the last nine balls, Australia needed 32 runs. Tim David played a crucial knock in achieving this, hitting a four and two sixes off the bowling of Adam Milne.
In the final over, Tim Southee gave off four runs from the first three balls.
However, Tim David played a flick shot for a six, keeping Australian hopes alive. With four runs required from the last delivery, he skillfully clipped a four through mid-wicket, finishing the innings with 31 not out from 10 balls.
Australia’s captain, Mitchell Marsh, displayed an outstanding performance by scoring an unbeaten 72 runs in the six-wicket victory, marking Australia’s third-highest run chase in T20s history.
“That was incredible, and I was pretty lucky in the end,” said Marsh, who also contributed with the ball by taking 1-21 in three overs. “I was swinging like a rusty gate towards the back end of the innings.”
“That is precisely why he [David] is in this team. It was a pleasure to watch.”
Rachin Ravindra smashed six sixes in a 35-ball 68, while Devon Conway scored 63 from 42 in the Black Caps’ total of 215-3.
David Warner, who has retired from Test and 50-over cricket but is still active in T20s for Australia until this year’s World Cup in June, contributed 32 runs to the chase.
The teams will play the second of three T20s in Auckland on Friday and then commence a two-Test series later this month.

Tim David takes his team over the finish line
New Zealand had pulled things in their favor when Australia needed 35 runs off the final two overs. That’s when David unleashed his explosive batting display and helped Australia collect 19 runs from the penultimate over bowled by Adam Milne.
With 16 to win off the last 6 balls, New Zealand’s experienced campaigner Tim Southee did his best to contain the run flow by conceding only 3 runs off the first three deliveries. However, David yet again ruined hosts’ plans and smashed 6, 2, and 4 off the final three balls to take Australia over the finish line.
Rachin Ravidra joined Conway and both took the responsibility on their shoulders to put on a fine display of spin hitting. Between them, Adam Zampa and Maxwell bowled five overs and conceded 74 runs. Even as they both fell in quick succession at the start of the death overs, New Zealand managed to score 41 off the last four overs to take the team comfortably past the 200-run mark, and yet NewZealand could not secure a victory on this target.
